The Polyamorous Affair

Strange Bedfellows

(Winter Palace Records 2010)

street date: August 15, 2010

The Polyamorous Affair is a nomadic-by-way-of-Los Angeles duo who weave a rich fantasy world into their own mischievous brand of electronic pop. The duo which formed in Denmark in 2007 is comprised of Eddie Chacon and Sissy Sainte-Marie who currently divide their time between Copenhagen and Berlin. This summer they release their 3rd album,
Strange Bedfellows. Widely acclaimed across the board from NME to Dazed Digital to bedroom bloggers, The Polyamorous Affair have become known for their strategic simplicity, chilly beats and warm vibes, all set in some bizarre frame of opulence. Their latest release finds the two conjuring up a strangely seductive electronic hybrid laced with haunting guitars and live percussion that pull you in, spellbound. Their live show is a multi-media experience featuring pioneering Visualist Mr. Cocoon.

Strange Bedfellows, the third release from The Polyamorous Affair finds the duo offering surprisingly few duets, instead each branching into two distinct styles. The album breathes and pulsates with vibrancy and balance. Eddie reconnects with his soul roots and traditional songwriting while Sissy taps into dreams and trails off on mystical disco byways. The alluringly distant front woman is at times angelic (Softer and Softer, The Avenues) and at times possessed by the Harlot of Babylon (Fantasy, Hypnotized), entities she seems to exorcise on the album’s grande finale, Rebel. Eddie floats with mercilessly beauty in flawless falsetto over big swinging beats (Strange, Shadows) and surprises us with some masterful guitar skills he has humbly hidden up his sleeve (Shadows, Swan Song, Rebel).

Currently the the band is in Europe collaborating with directors from each country they visit on videos for Strange Bedfellows.

(2010 Winter Palace Records)

street date: September 15, 2010

Essay is Peter Moran and Renata Raksha. The duo share a love of music that is dancey, ironic but earnest, and unashamed. At the heart of their sound is the essence of Giorgio Moroder, Sparks, Dj Kingdom, D.A.F., Extreme Animals, Hecuba and the best Power 106 jams.

Renata grew up the daughter of a fashion designer in Communist Russia.

A few latitudes over in Belgium, Peter traded acid house cassettes with his friends. At home, his mom played Leonard Cohen and Sparks records.

They met at White Slave Trade, a warehouse cum art gallery and music venue in Echo Park, Los Angeles. Peter was a founding member of the squelchy, party duo Laco$te from the same explosion of creativity surrounding the Smell (Abe Vigoda, the Mae Shi, HEALTH, Lucky Dragons).

After collaborating on visual projects, their glam-friendly aesthetic soon found a musical expression in Essay. Renata exuded charisma and drama through an economic use of movement that complemented Peter’s dance-friendly tracks. After a handful of shows in L.A., Essay booked a West coast tour. Essay’s debut EP is being released by Winter Palace later this year, with more touring in the works.

Wet Look vs Hard Place

(2010 Winter Palace Records)

street date: September 1, 2010

Over six decades ago two black magicians engaged a highly forbidden Qaballic ritual known as the Babalon Working in an effort to conjure up a daemonic life force that would bring about the apocalypse of Armegedon and end civilization as we know it. Both men died believing their attempts to unleash the goddess of unbridled sexual impulse had been fruitless. Only now has it become evident that the Scarlet Haired Harlot who has come to rule the world goes not by the name Babalon, but Actually Huizenga. The Crowleyan Moonchild is alive and well and living in Echo Park, California.

Born into a a Kenneth Anger-like world of privileged Hollywood decadence, Huizenga casts her spells via neo 80’s synth pop and psychedelic art-core pornography. With a deeply passionate love for the darkest depths of man’s lowest nature, she rules her Queendom on a throne of diamond encrusted skulls flanked by her gay husband sphinxes. Hers is a land of eternally youthful immortals, b-movies, no-tell motels, homoerotic fetishism, all night orgies, hairless cats, cannibalism, spandex, ritual sacrifice, white slave trade, and hard drugs. Together she and her disciples writhe on a minotaur rug making music of passion, pursuing endlessly their gracious prey.

Hard Place and Wet Look are two bands Actually fronted from 2004-2010 in Los Angeles and San Francisco. Hard Place consited of Actually Huizenga and Freddy Cristy (with drummer Thomas Marzella and bassist Elisha Drons). When Hard Place ended in 2009, Actually and Chaz Windus joined forces to create Wet Look. Things got harder, wetter, and weirder. Currently she’s wreaking havoc in London working on a full length solo album slated for early 2011. This year Winter Palace Records releases the best of Actually (so far). Hard Place vs Wet Look is just the beginning. Even Vice magazine says so.

Mr. Cocoon

(Winter Palace Records 2011)

streetdate: 2011

Mr. Cocoon (David Cabrera) is an LA based musician, DJ, VJ, and visual artist. He began his  career as a live visualist in San Francisco in 1995, where he performed interactive slide shows of his original photography. This eventually evolved into a performance approach of a live musician and happenings in the spirit of psychedelic narratives, Nam June Paik and late 60’s light shows. Employing a combination of self-produced footage, found video and live-synthesized video sources, Cocoon developed a technique of his own. His visual shows have been featured with DJs and bands and at clubs, underground parties, and galleries since 1995. Often he uses upwards of seven overlapping projectors and both analog/digital and optical components to create new textures and visual compositions. Cocoon has performed video art collaborations with Ladytron, Peanut Butter Wolf, The Flaming Lips, Lance Rock, The Polyamorous Affair, Lady Tigra, and The Cacophony Society. He also has gained a following as a host to some of east LA’s most debaucherous after hours parties and secret speakeasies. But that’s all we can say about that.

In addition to a feverish devotion to video art, he was composing music all the while. Cocooning himself in a home studio situated in the space he dug out of the foundation below his Silverlake home, he recorded over 1,200 tracks within its earthen walls.  Mr. Cocoon rarely played his music live, but rather for the positive therapeutic effects its sounds had on himself as the composer. Suffering from hallucinations and depression since his teens, Mr. Cocoon created his own custom music as a means of healing, utilizing sound vibration an alternative to pharmaceuticals. This winter he will release 10 of the tracks which have brought balance and harmony to his moods, beneficial synchronization of his brain hemispheres, altered the frequency resonance of his being, uplifted his spirit and elevated his mood. Mr. Cocoon hopes listeners will become participants in a journey to inner space. He also hopes they will dance.
